Contemporary Garden Room in St Albans

Project Overview

Our client in St Albans needed a stylish, fully-functional garden room to serve as a versatile space, moving beyond a simple storage shed to a true extension of their home. The core requirement was a high-quality, contemporary structure that included a dedicated WC for convenience, and a striking side canopy arrangement for outdoor relaxation. We designed and quoted for a generous 4m x 4.3m space with premium architectural finishes, integrating all utilities to create a beautiful, year-round usable space right in their garden.

HOW WE DID IT

The client’s vision was for a premium, contemporary garden room that offered more than a basic office – it needed to be a self-contained retreat. The main challenge was integrating a full WC installation within the available footprint while maintaining a spacious main room. This required careful planning of the internal layout and ensuring seamless connections for water and drainage, which was possible due to the assumption of existing services being available on site.

Our design centred around a robust 4m x 4.3m structure with a modern, low-profile 2.5m external height. The aesthetic was achieved using durable pressed steel cladding and an EPDM roof, giving it a sleek, architectural look. A key feature of the design was the expansive glazing, which included two slider doors and a custom aluminum corner glazing section spanning 3m to 4.6m, flooding the interior with natural light and offering stunning garden views. This design choice elevates the structure beyond a standard outbuilding, making it a true garden room focal point.

To enhance the outdoor living aspect, we included a substantial side canopy arrangement. This feature, complete with a solid rear wall (to be finished in a black architectural aluminum panel) provides a sheltered area perfect for seating and entertaining. The option for a faux living wall was also included, further softening the modern lines and integrating the structure with the garden landscape. Inside, the space was finished to a high standard with LVT flooring, painted walls, and a comprehensive electrical package, including an allowance for sockets, downlights, and external lighting, ensuring it's a comfortable and fully operational space from day one.
